Western Fairfax Basketball Club
PLAYERS SHOULD ATTEND AS MANY TRYOUTS AS POSSIBLE FOR THEIR AGE GROUP
The main portion of team evaluations will occur during the first two tryouts for each age group so players should make every effort to attend on those days. Naturally, players are highly encouraged to attend every tryout for their age group.
IMPORTANT: Players (and parents) MUST BE prepared to make a financial commitment at the time of selection. Failure to make that commitment may result in losing a position on the team. ALL financial commitments made on player selection day are NON-REFUNDABLE.
Tryout Fees and Membership Fees
All teams will have a $25 tryout fee (one fee covers all tryout days) - All checks should be made payable to WFBC.
WFBC will have three price structures for the 2010 Season:
•The U8 (3rd Grade), and U9 (4th Grade), and U10 (5th Grade) programs are designed as a introduction to full court basketball at a higher level than most of these girls have ever experienced. U8 - U10 teams typically carry approximately 14 players per team (since many girls play multiple sports).†
•The U10 (5th Grade) through U15 (10th Grade) year groups will play very competitive schedules and will typically carry 9 to 12 players per team.*
•The Showcase Team (U16 Elite team) costs will vary depending on the number of Showcase Tournaments - Typical college showcase costs are higher than traditional AAU tournament fees. The showcase team will typically carry 8 to 10 players.
† It should also be noted that U8 and U9 teams typically carry more players due to involvement with other activities at that age (soccer, softball, baseball, etc.). Also, in many cases, the selected tournament fees for the youngest teams are typically much lower than the team tournament fees for the older groups.
U8 and U10 Planned Fee Structure for 2010**
U8 - U10 - Approximately $300* - Basic fees for each teams cover the cost of:
•Reversible Uniform

•WFBC administrative costs
•Fairfax County Recreational Fees
•Team Practice Equipment
* Coaches may also elect to play additional tournaments which are not a part of the basic fee structure.

Additional Costs
Once team selections are finalized, all players will also need to go online to get their AAU cards - WFBC Coaches will provide teams with required information.
In order to help keep the costs of the program at a minimum, U8 - U15 players are provided with reversible game jerseys (in 2009, the U15 National team wore these reversible jerseys as they captured a spot in the Elite Sixteen) - Any team who would like to order game uniforms will be able to do so at an additional cost (approximately $50 for for Black jersey, $50 for White Jersey, $50 for Shorts) - Uniform orders MUST be submitted immediately after team selection.
WFBC Fees DO NOT include cost of travel expenses and coaches' travel expenses (WFBC limits player costs for coaches' expenses to two coaches on any given trip). Coaches may also elect to play additional tournaments which are not a part of the basic fee structure - Coaches will have this information readily available at tryouts.
Parents/Guardians should be prepared to make basic fee payment in full on the day of selection. Uniform payments will require 50% on order and the remaining 50% on delivery.
ALL WFBC Membership fees are NON-REFUNDABLE and not PRO-RATED.
NOTE: Any players with a delinquent fee from any previous season will be required to pay all outstanding WFBC fees as well as 2010 Membership fees IN FULL on the day of selection. ALL balances for current year (2010) memberships must be paid by 1 April. Players will not be allowed to participate beyond that date if fees have not been paid. Anyone unsure about previous balances should contact the General Manager prior to tryout dates.
Families with financial difficulties should contact the General Manager to discuss possible options available to the player and the family to obtain a Regular Membership. We do not want financial difficulty to hinder a player from realizing opportunities provided by this organization.
“Playing Up”
We often have questions about "playing up." We encourage ALL players to try out in their respective age groups. During the past two years, AAU has made several changes to the age determination dates (please check the AAU webpage at to determine your age group). The essence of these new rules is that it provides players who have late birthdays with and opportunity to play with their classmates. However, on RARE occasions, a player may exhibit ELITE skills that will allow her to play in an older age group. Players in this category should read our policy regarding playing up.
One of the main reasons that WFBC has this policy in place is to ensure that if a player is trying to play up and they do not make that team, they will still have an opportunity to play with their own age group.
WFBC Policy Regarding “Playing Up”
Athletes who desire to "play up" MUST make a formal request to the General Manager. The request should include:
•the parent's name
•the player's name
•the player's date of birth
•the player's experience level
•a brief explanation of why the player should be considered
If approved, the General Manager will provide a schedule and instructions that the player MUST follow in order to be considered for an older age group. Once the player attends a tryout at the higher age level, the higher age group National coach can select that player for the higher age group if the player is clearly evaluated in the top 5 or 6 players in that group. If a player does not demonstrate abilities to perform well in the higher age group, the player will be asked to move back to their actual age group.
If there is a conflict regarding where a player should be placed, the WFBC General Manager will make the final decision regarding that player.
WFBC Tryouts
Basic Tryout Information
Each year (usually in mid-February, WFBC hosts open tryouts for all of its teams. WFBC is maintaining a tryout blog to help keep everyone informed about tryout information. Players and parents can also check the calendar maintained on this site to stay up to date on tryout times.
If a player wants to try out for a WFBC club but has a conflict with our tryout dates, the player should contact the coach of the team - if possible, the coach will try to work with all players to provide an opportunity to be selected for a team. Please note - while we will work to hold firm to our tryout dates, times occasionally need to be changed so please continue to check the schedule page to stay up to date on all WFBC events.
